I saw a new series of Arby's commercials today that are based in snide, offensive parodies of celebrities (Hulk Hogan, Joan Rivers and perhaps others).

I think there is an essential difference between poking fun and the kind of maliciousness in these commercials ... and I believe that Arby's is rude and irresponsible in airing them.

I will therefore make no purchases from Arby's of any kind and I urge all those I know to take similar action.

Presumption?

A reply to a recent post concluded "It seems kinda presumptuous of me to assume that I'll be able to change things, to make a difference, but hey, I have to have some kind of goals in life."

I think it is a sad commentary on our times that cynicism has become so firmly established that the idea of an individual being able to make a difference is considered presumptuous. Throughout history, the primary force of change has always been the determination of individuals.

Sometimes this has been evidenced in one individual holding fast to a new idea in the face of scoffing and even oppression, sometimes in an individual's unrelenting insistence that the time for a change has come ... that it is no longer ok to move to the back of the bus.

Galileo and Rosa Parks are famous because of the scale of their impact. But the principles behind their "presumptions" apply to situations each of us face every day. When we choose to do the right thing even when it is inconvenient or unpopular ... when we choose to think rather than go along with the consensus of the group ... when we say, "this is what should be" rather than "what can one person do?".
